There is the one who looks, and there is what is looked at: images, sounds, thoughts. A memory, while you are in it, is now. A dream is too.
Observer and information
The present is not the content. The present is whoever is looking. Everything else — this room, a film, a thought that passes — is information that appears.
From inside, there is no place from which to check what kind of experience this is. A memory, a dream, a simulation, this page: while you live them, they are the same thing.
The device
In the short, VR Flashback takes this intuition all the way. It does not film a scene from the outside. It maps what appears to the person who records: images, sounds, sensations, thoughts. Then it plays that back in another body.
It copies the information. It does not copy the one who looks. Whoever relives it does not become the other: they look at the other’s world as if it were their own. When the eyes open, only what appears has changed. The present has not.
Two movements
The short lets you feel two of them. First: you are living a memory — and for you, while you live it, that is the present. Then the eyes open. And if that were tape as well?
The film does not answer. It should not.
There is no exit from it
So you cannot be certain. Not because it is a simulation. Because you have nowhere from which to check.
Virtual does not ask whether the world exists. It asks: can you know?
